jessicajean Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen Jan 28, 2008 6:22 PM I just started this book two days ago and I'm already half way through it. I definitely can't seem to put it down. The story takes place during the Great Depression, centering around Jacob Jankowski and his adventures/misadventures as part of a traveling circus. The novel is full of beautiful writing, humor, romance, multi-faceted characters, and a very lovable elephant. I'm captivated by the storyline, history, and characters of "Water for Elephants".
mabess RIP Robert Jordan Sep 17, 2007 10:25 AM One of my favorite authors died yesterday. I love Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series. After being sick for quite a while, he passed away due to complications from primary amyloidosis. How sad. I'm keeping his family in my prayers. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070917/ap_en_ot/obit_jordan;_ylt=AoYJaCvxKFgEJ7QMhk1arUms0NUE
mabess Forget About It by Caprice Crane Sep 5, 2007 4:27 AM The second book from ex-MTV employee Caprice Crane, Forget About It is somewhat predictable, but still funny and smart at times. Jordan is 25 and really seems to have a crappy and frustrating life: she doesn't get along with her mother and evil younger sister, she never gets credit for any of her ideas at work, and her meat-head boyfriend is cheating on her. Her best friends, Todd (my fave character) and Cat, urge her to stand up for herself and take some action, but Jordan remains passive and unappreciated. Until, she has an accident. "I heard the guy on the phone say 'motor vehicle versus bicycle,' and I distinctly remember thinking it wasn't a fair fight." So, Jordan fakes amnesia to escape all of her problems. And, honestly, who hasn't thought of doing something similar? The lies work for awhile, she falls in love, but, unfortunately, her life starts to fall apart again. Then, surprise! she actually gets real amnesia, and the plot thickens. Overall, I really liked the deeper implications of the story, i.e. you are in control of your own life, take action. However, the ending kind of annoyingly subverts this message. So, while I liked reading this novel, the story and dialogue don't really come close to touching the originality and humor of Crane's first novel. My favorite part about this book are the small touches of funny throughout: a karaoke-crazy bag lady, the tiny G'n'R reference in the hospital, and Thanksgiving dinner with strangers, just to name a few.
